The North Face of the Eiger is notorious as the world’s most dangerous mountain. Its ascent by a team of German and Austrian climbers in 1938 was an amazing propaganda coup for Hitler. One of the team, Heinrich Harrer, became a national hero in post-war Austria. The story he told about the climb in his bestselling book The White Spider inspired many, myself included, to look for adventure in the mountains. To grasp a sense of his achievement, I arranged to film a modern ascent of the route he originally climbed on the Eiger in the 1930s - an undertaking which took a dramatic and unexpected turn.

Until our film, Harrer himself had always denied involvement with the Nazis; in Climbing for the Fatherland we unravelled the truth among captured German war records in Washington.
