I combined high-action footage of air- and sea-borne life savers at work with audio feeds from VHF radio, the 999 emergency network and aircraft intercoms to create gripping, present-tense accounts of unfolding rescue stories. I made three TV series about the helicopter and lifeboat crews who watch over Britain’s coasts. They were hugely popular, immensely enjoyable to make and completely dominated their TV transmission slots. The three series were cited by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency as having a dramatic and positive impact on public safety awareness and behaviour in coastal areas.
