The hardest part of placing present-day crime in the public domain is finding contributors willing to go on the record and tell the story; most are too frightened of the consequences. Godfathers was commissioned by ITV1 to name names and expose the key individuals profiting from organised crime in Britain. The third programme in the series, Protection, investigated Manchester’s gangland. Using a network of contributors and undercover filming, we were able to show the extent of protection rackets in Greater Manchester and identify the bullyboys behind them.
